"On July 16, 2010, a motorcycle accident in Denver involved two critical witness Sanchez and Perez. These
witnesses were recognized with a cash reward. They were driving home when they saw the at fault drunk driver Villegas, then 25, crash into Jon Brand,59 and Debbie Pyatock. The accident occurred at the intersection of 70th Avenue and Broadway. The two witnesses did the right thing and went out of their way and followed the car that hit the motorcycle. When the drunk driver backed up and took off from the accident location they followed him. The motorcycle driver Brand died shortly after the accident. Debbie Pyatock the injured victim nominated Sanchez and Perez to receive the Law Tigers reward months later.
I wanted to thank these witnesses for what they did. I hope it encourages more people to step up and do the right thing. As a practicing attorney who has handled many hit and run cases and many motorcycle cases, I know that witness are critical to obtaining justice for clients. Many times the accident report contains no witness information, so sometimes there is no way to make a civil claim and get medical bills paid or other costs paid by the at fault driver. In other cases we are able to make a little known Uninsured Motorist claim. In Colorado the law states that if the at fault driver was a "hit and run" driver, then it qualifies as an Uninsured Motorist case and the injured party can sue his own insurance policy for damages. The injured victim can seek a settlement from his own auto policy, because it takes the place of the car that left the scene."
